We always experience uninterrupted power supply, though you’ll also agree with me that power outage occurs, though in rare scenarios. For example, a power outage can occur due to squirrels eating up wires amidst other eventualities.
This problem has gradually put homeowners in fear for the safety of their appliances. It’s what prompts them to question the probability of the power outage damaging their TVs.
To clear the air, an occurrence of a power outage cannot damage your TV. Power going off will not damage your TV. Instead, what will harm your TV is the power coming on. In a case where the network voltage may be higher or lower than the ideal amount, there’ll be a problem.
Can Sudden Power Outage Damage TV?
A sudden power outage can not damage your TV. TVs usually go through a series of testing that protects them against occurrences like a power outage. As a result, your TV set will cease to function when a sudden power outage occurs; the outage won’t necessarily damage it.
Problems can only surface if you don’t disconnect the TV from the mains after the occurrence of a power outage. It’s crucial to do so because the power restored through the electric wires may not come with the usual or recommended voltage for your TV.
When power comes back on with the current or voltage too much or too low, your TV might malfunction. It may harm the TV. So as much as a sudden power outage doesn’t necessarily damage your TV, always remember to disconnect it from the mains when such events occur.
Does A Power Surge Affect A TV?
Power surges can affect your TV. I’ve experienced such a situation before. Power surges usually have high voltages, which TVs are generally sensitive against. These high voltages cause an arc of electrical current within the TV, and the heat generated in the arc can furthermore cause damage to the circuit boards and other components.
The voltages accompanying power surges are usually higher than the designed voltage for TVs. So trust me, even though signs may not be physically showing to indicate that power surges are affecting your TV, the internal components of your TV are gradually degrading, and the TV’s lifespan as a whole is reducing.
One day you might merely find that your TV is no more functioning. Power surges generally occur when interrupted electricity or probably an instability in the usual flow of electrical current. There are many reasons you would experience either fluctuation in current flow or interrupted electricity.
Plugging in high-power devices or merely switching other appliances on and off could be why. When you plug in a high-power consuming device, it will initiate a spike, which will send a spark along with the electric current transferred to other devices like your TV.
Similarly, merely switching appliances on and off can disturb the flow of electrical current. As a result, an electric surge may occur. You could also experience power surges if the wiring in your house is faulty. Therefore, it’s good you always get a professional electrician who can properly install your wiring.
The professional will install the wiring in a way that they protect themselves from situations of spikes. More so, plugging too many appliances into a circuit could trigger a surge effect.
Another cause could be lightning. Lightening or thunderstorms that lead to strikes on your TV dish could occur, and you may experience power outages sometimes. When the power comes back on in most cases, high voltages are initiated, which may cause damage to your TV.
In all, enormous power surges, as with a lightning strike, can cause immediate damage, like burning circuits, melting plastic and metal parts. While low power surges won’t necessarily melt parts or blow out fuses, they’ll make internal components rust and gradually degrade.
Small surges won’t even leave any outward evidence, so you may not even be aware they’re happening. On the other hand, power surges negatively affect TVs, whether small, large, or enormous. Be cautious!
Can a TV Be Fixed After a Power Outage?
You can fix your TV following an event of a power outage. After an interrupted power, your TV will not function as usual, and the electric cables could be a little bit messy. All you need to do is perform a power drain on your TV after you’ve unplugged it.
Push and grip the start button for 15-35 seconds to perform this power drain exercise. This action will clear all the excess power in your TV if there’s any.
After that, connect the TV back to the mains, and switch it on. If it doesn’t still turn on, try the process again and leave the TV disconnected for quite some time. Some components will reboot themselves. This technique should probably resolve your issue though it’s not 100% effective.
Scenarios where your TV refuses to turn on after a power outage, even after you’ve disengaged and reconnected it, could also occur. In such a case, it is most likely that the power supply regulation section is faulty. If you’re handy with electric circuit boards, you can take a look at them yourself.
The most widely recognized approach to such a situation is replacing the entire board. And if you have no idea about electric circuit boards, I highly suggest you call the attention of a professional electrician. Don’t try it out yourself!
How Do I Reset My TV After a Surge?
Resetting your TV after a surge could be so easy. All you need do is merely unplug it from the mains and remove the coax chord from the TV. After that, plug it back to the mains, and switch it on. Then go to the main menu, and navigate to settings. Next, choose options and navigate to factory default. The menu will then show you YES/NO select yes to Confirm the factory default restore. You don’t even need to be a pro to reset your TV.
1. Remove the coax chord.
Remove the coax cable connected to the TV. By this, you’re automatically disconnecting the satellite receiver.
2. Connect the TV to the mains and switch it on, then go to the main menu
Here, connect the TV to a power source and switch it on. After that, move to the main menu. Go to either settings or system settings when you get to the main menu. The perfect name varies. It depends on the manufacturer.
3. Choose options and navigate to factory settings.
After navigating to settings or system settings as the case may be, choose options/advanced options, then move to the factory default/factory reset and select it.
4. Affirm the factory default by selecting yes or pressing OK.
After you’ve selected factory default, the menu will display a Yes/No prompt, select Yes. You may alternatively press OK or Enter to affirm the factory default restore.
The screen will then go blank, and your TV will display the Main Menu screen, turn it off. Shortly after, attach the coaxial cable back to the TV and turn it on. Easier than thought, right?
Can I Protect My TV from sudden Power Failure?
If you live in a region with frequent unstable voltage or successive blackouts, you should seriously consider getting a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) unit; You can protect your TV from sudden failures.
Power failures are a disturbance and can actually harm or obliterate your appliances, definitively your TV. So don’t allow that to happen.
If the power goes out for an extended period, switch off or turn off the TV. What’s more?
When the power returns on, let the power balance out for a couple of moments before turning the TV back on. Investing in power strips with surge suppressors won’t be a poorly conceived notion.
Conclusion
A power outage can cause harm to your TV. You should ensure to follow all the safety tips that I’ve suggested. Even though power surge occurrences are sometimes by chance, try your best to avoid them. You should even be able to perceive and stop some of them.
Also, ensure to call the attention of a specialist. In situations where you’re confused or unusual happenings occur, don’t assume.
